TAMPA – Florida is poised to make a bold decision — one that could change the presidential race.

Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon tells CNN an appointed committee is set to change Florida’s primary date to January 31, a date so early it would even beat Iowa’s first-in-the-country caucus on February 6.

“I really honestly do think our state … needs to take it’s rightful place in the process, … no offense to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina and Nevada, those other states, ” said local political consultant Travis Horn.

Tampa, FL – Dozens of people kicked off the countdown to the Republican National Convention Saturday.

Held at the Tampa Club downtown, the crowd included corporate and political leaders from the Bay Area. The event also served as a way to promote the city itself.

“We want to do something to start this thing off right,” said organizer, Travis Horn. “We want to do something to really put a point here in time and say, we’re ready, Tampa’s ready. We want to showcase area businesses, we want to showcase Tampa for what it is.”

Republican presidential candidate, Rick Santorum, attended the countdown event. He placed fourth in the Iowa Straw Poll earlier this month.

“It’s great so many people are here. I get an opportunity to get in front of a lot of good Floridians, and I have the opportunity to make an impression here, and that’s what we’re doing,” said the former U.S. senator.

Candidate Michele Bachman is expected Sunday in the Bay Area at a church in Lutz and a rally in Sarasota.

A recent Sachs-Mason Dixon poll shows Mitt Romney leading the GOP pack in Florida.

But experts say it’s just the beginning.

The first Republican presidential debate in Florida is set for Sept. 12, happening right here in Tampa.
